German Daniel Brands dispatched of Marcos Baghdatis for the first minor upset of the tournament so far.
Daniel Brands (Q) def. Marcos Baghdatis 6-0, 7-6(3)
Qualifier Daniel Brands has been on a tear this season. Ranked 120 at the start of the season, the German has had to qualify at each tour event. Not only did he successfully qualify, but he made the semifinals in Doha and the quarters in Dubai. Now the qualifier has trounced Marcos Baghdatis.
Brands breezed through the first set without facing a single break point. He made quick work of the Baghdatis serve, proving efficient on break points, with only 1 missed chance in 4 opportunities. The set was over quickly, with Baghdatis staring down a bagel.
The second set was a real battle. Baghdatis shored up the damage on his serve, but he made no in-roads on Brands' serve either. The set ended in a tiebreak when neither man managed a break. Brands had been the better player through-out the match and he carried that form into the tiebreaker to close out the win in straight sets.
Lleyton Hewitt def. Lukas Rosol 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
The woes of Lukas Rosol continued in Indian Wells on Thursday evening, with the Czech falling in 3 sets to Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt. Rosol, who became famous for upsetting Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012, has had little to cheer about since the start of the new season.
Rosol's serve was dismal in the first set. He put in a paltry 41% of first serves and faced down 9 break points. Hewitt only managed to convert one of the chances, but it was all the Aussie needed to take the lead.
Hewitt's own form dipped in the second set; he allowed Rosol a look into his service game for the first time. Rosol secured a break and then an insurance break to level the match at a set a piece. But Hewitt came back with a vengeance in the third set. The Aussie snagged a pair of early breaks in the set to dish up a breadstick.
