World No. 3 Andy Murray makes his return to competition as the ATP World Tour continues the hardcourt season in Indian Wells, California. The reigning US Open champion enters the Masters 1000 event as the third seed.
World No. 3 Andy Murray is back on court after finishing runner-up to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old enters into the Masters 1000 Indian Wells looking to win his first title at the event. Murray, a former finalist in Indian Wells, has compiled a 10-1 season record.
The third seed leads a competitive quarter of the draw that includes: (7) Juan Martin Del Potro, (11) Nicolas Almagro, (16) Kei Nishikori, (19) Tommy Haas, (22) Alexandr Dolgopolov, (25) Jeremy Chardy and (26) Martin Klizan.
Additional players in the section are Yen-Hsun Lu, Santiago Giraldo, Carlos Berlocq, Lukas Lacko, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Pablo Andujar, Alejandro Falla, Paul-Henri Mathieu and former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko.
The closest seed to Murray is (26) Klizan, who looms as a possible third-round opponent. Should the seeds hold through the draw, the Scot faces a likely fourth-round meeting with (16) Nishikori or (22) Dolgopolov and a quarterfinal clash with (7) Del Potro.
Should Murray progress through the latter stage of the tournament, he awaits a probable semifinal meeting with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. With a berth in the final, Murray will have the opportunity to overtake defending champion Roger Federer as World No. 2.
"Preparation and consistency are key for me this year and I'm going into every tournament I play with the aim of winning it," Murray explained. "I'm in a good place right now."
Following an opening-round bye, the World No. 3 is slated to begin his run against either Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy or Japan’s Tatsuma Ito.
