• Ferrer withstands Fognini, into Acapulco final

    3/2/13 5:54 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer withstands Fognini, into Acapulco final David Ferrer dropped his first set of the tournament, but he was able to rally in the third set to defeat Fabio Fognini.

David Ferrer was not as his best in this semifinal match. The Spaniard faced a full dozen break points for the match and he looked uncharacteristically tired at the end of his 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 victory.

Ferrer showed what has made him the No. 4 player in the world though, by fighting off all but two of those chances and showing his customary tough mentality, but the his groundstrokes were not as dependable as they usually are.

The top seed took the first set on a single break of serve, but the second set proved to be a challenge for Ferrer. Ferrer allowed Fognini to keep pace with him, with both men surrendering a pair of service breaks each to force a tiebreaker and it was the Italian who eventually came out on top.

Fognini ran out of steam in the third set. Ferrer secured early breaks of serve and made no mistake serving out the match.

Ferrer awaits the winner of Rafael Nadal and Nicolas Almagro in the final.
