Haas, Berankis reach Delray Beach quarterfinals Tommy Haas takes care of Denis Istomin in straight sets on Thursday in Delray Beach. Haas is joined in the quarterfinals by lucky loser Ricardas Berankis, who defeated Jack Sock in three.

    (2) Tommy Haas d. Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-1

Haas raced away from Istomin in one hour and seven minutes during second-round action at the Delray Beacj International Tennis Championships on Thursday. The No. 2 seed appeared to have the upper hand right away, but he missed four break chances in his opening return game and two more in his second effort against the Istomin serve. While his opponent struggled to hold, the 34-year-old German cruised through his first-set service games without facing a break point. Inevitably, Haas finally got over the hump at 5-4 and he did so at love. He raced to a 0-40 advantage and won the set when Istomin sent a forehand just past the baseline.

From there it was all over for Istomin, who held for 1-1 in the second but then lost the last five games. The 42nd-ranked Uzbek won just a single first-serve return point in set two, the same number as he had earned in the first. Haas closed out the proceedings with a love hold at 5-1, finishing the job with a perfect backhand approach shot. The world No. 19 awaits either Ivan Dodig or Evgeny Donskoy in the quarterfinals.

(LL) Ricardas Berankis d. (WC) Jack Sock 3-6, 6-4, 6-1

Berankis continued his improbably successful week by overcoming Sock in one hour and 31 minutes on Thursday afternoon. Sock broke early in the first set to take control of the match and he never came close to giving it back throughout the opener, as he lost a mere four points in four service games. For good measure, the 20-year-old American broke again at 5-3 and capitalized on set point thanks to a Berankis double-fault. Sock seemingly had victory in his grasp when he earned another scalp of his opponent's serve at 2-1 in the second.

That, however, is when the tide turned. Berankis promptly earned his first break of the day before surviving a tough service game at 2-3. Sock collapsed from there, donating serve again at 3-3 with a double-fault on break point. Berankis eventually served things out to force a third, which he thoroughly dominated. The 87th-ranked Lithuanian converted all three of his break points and held all of his service games with ease. Next up for the lucky loser is Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-5.
