David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro will take the court on quarterfinal day at the Abierto Mexican Telcel.
David Ferrer (1) vs. Paolo Lorenzi
This will be the second meeting between David Ferrer and Paolo Lorenzi, a clash that came just this year in Doha. Ferrer won with a decisive 6-3, 6-0 scoreline. The Spaniard has a pair of titles on the season already and a 19-2 record. He has yet to lose before the semifinals of a tournament, including a run at the Australian Open.
Lorenzi is ranked 57th in the world. He comes into Acapulco off two terrible showings in Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires, where he suffered first round losses. The Italian has a losing record on the season (6-7), even including the two match wins so far this week.
This should be a walk in the park for Ferrer. The top seed is playing at one of his most successful tournaments against a player who is struggling with his clay court form at the moment. Ferrer in straight sets.
Nicolas Almagro (3) vs. Horacio Zeballos (8)
Horacio Zeballos of Argentina shocked Rafael Nadal in the final of Vina del Mar, taking the title from the Spaniard. But since then, the world No. 41 has played poorly. He has two consecutive first round losses in Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires.
Nicolas Almagro, the No. 12 player in the world from Spain, doesn't have any titles yet this season, but he has played well enough to get to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. He also had a semifinal showing in Buenos Aires, where he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka.
Zeballos is capable of make Almagro work for his win, but the Argentine will need to up his level if he wants to make a match of it.
Prediction - Almagro in straight sets.
