Defending champion Roger Federer secured a semifinal spot in Dubai with a straight-sets ousting of familiar foe Nikolay Davydenko. The second seed is through to take on 3rd seed Tomas Berdych in the next round.
World No. 2 Roger Federer needed less than an hour to dispatch quarterfinal opponent Nikolay Davydenko late Thursday, 6-2, 6-2. The Swiss held eight of 8 service games without facing a break point.
“I was very happy, it was a good match for me,” Federer explained. “I served well from the start. Then, also, I thought I had good timing on the return in particular after missing a lot of returns in the first match. And the second match, obviously, he was serving bigger, Granollers. Today, I thought I was really striking it well, and then virtue of that, was getting the first strike in and then I was able to control the baseline more.”
Federer ended the match with five aces and just eight points surrendered on serve.
He is slated to take on 3rd seed Tomas Berdych in the semifinals.
