Nicolas Almagro was forced to work for his second round win over compatriot Tommy Robredo, while top seed David Ferrer cruised.
Nicolas Almagro (3) def. Tommy Robredo 6-4, 7-6(4)
This match was nearly a three-setter. Tommy Robredo had a pair of set points in the second set, but Almagro fought hard to hold him off and eventually he was able to break back. With neither man known for his serving prowess, there were five breaks of serve. Robredo actually earned many more chances to break than Almagro did, but the No. 3 seed was more opportunistic. He also played a superior tie-breaker to seal the straight set victory.
Almagro sets up a quarterfinal showdown with Vina Del Mar champion Horacio Zeballos; the Spaniard is on a collision course with Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.
David Ferrer (1) def. Wayne Odesnik 6-2, 6-1
David Ferrer continued to roll in Acapulco. The defending champion dispatched American qualifier Wayne Odesnik in a comprehensive 6-2, 6-1 victory.
There were many break point chances for both men, with Ferrer earning a whopping 14 in the brief two-set match and Odesnik with seven opportunities. Ferrer proved to be much better both converting and fighting off break points. The Spaniard converted 5 times and surrendered just one break of serve himself.
The Buenos Aires champion appears in good form headed into the weekend, with a blockbuster showdown looming in the final. Ferrer will take on Italian Paolo Lorenzi in the quarters.
