Defending champion Roger Federer made the last eight at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after defeating Spain's Marcel Granollers in straight sets. The veteran is through to his eighth quarterfinal at the event.
Roger Federer advanced to the quarterfinal in Dubai by virtue of his straight-sets ousting of Spain's Marcel Granollers. The 31-year-old Swiss held 10 consecutive service games en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 71 minutes.
Federer earned a key service break at 3-2 in the opening set. Three set points came at 5-3 for the defending champion, who closed once Granollers missed a service return. The Swiss continued the effort to 3-2 in the second set. Federer missed a trio of match point chances, but recovered to seal the match on his fourth opportunity.
The World No. 2 completed the second-round match with 32 of 38 first-service points captured.
He will take on former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko for a place in the semifinal. The Russian won his second-round match over Victor Hanescu in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(2).
