Tournament seed Andreas Seppi made a successful start in Dubai with a straight-sets win over France's Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Italian is joined in round two by fellow seed Mikhail Youzhny, who rallied to defeat Blaz Kavcic.

Seventh seed Andreas Seppi is through to the second round after upending former world No. 12 Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets. The Italian tallied 5 aces and six service breaks en route to a 6-3, 7-5 victory in 86 minutes. Mathieu struggled on second serve, winning just 12 of 41 points.
Seppi will take on the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol in the next round.
(8) Mikhail Youzhny def. Blaz Kavcic 1-6, 6-1, 6-3
Eighth seed Mikhail Youzhny came through a difficult first-round match against Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic Monday afternoon. The former world No. 8 rallied to a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win in an hour and 29 minutes. Youzhny completed the effort with five of 10 break points converted.
The Russian is slated to meet German qualifier Daniel Brands in round two.
