• Nadal, Ferrer headline in Acapulco

    2/25/13 2:41 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal, Ferrer headline in Acapulco Rafael Nadal, just a few weeks back on tour after a half a year layoff, will put his knees to the test in his toughest test of the year to date.

Though David Ferrer is the top seed this week in Acapulco, all eyes will be on Rafael Nadal, who comes into the tournament off a victory in Sao Paolo, his first since the French Open in 2012.

Nadal heads up the bottom half of the draw and though his quarter doesn't have much danger beyond a possible quarterfinal match against Thomaz Bellucci, he drew Nicolas Almagro in his half. His countryman is an excellent clay-courter and if he makes it through his section, and Nadal makes it through his, it will be the toughest opponent the Spaniard has faced since he returned to the tour.

Ferrer drew No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka, the man he defeated in three sets last week in the finals of Buenos Aires. Ferrer has Benoit Paire in his quarter, while Wawrinka's other seed is Jurgen Melzer. Unfortunately for Wawrinka, David Nalbandian, who made the finals in Sao Paolo, also lurks in his quarter.

Prediction - This should be a Nadal-Ferrer final, but more importantly, a true test of Nadal's form as the all-important spring clay-court swing looms in April and May.
