Federer survives first-round test in Dubai Defending champion Roger Federer is safely through to the second round at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after rallying to defeat wildcard Malek Jaziri.

World No. 2 Roger Federer made a successful start to his Dubai title defense, having rallied to oust wildcard Malek Jaziri late Monday. The 31-year-old Swiss struck 10 aces en route to a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 victory in 90 minutes.

After dropping the opening set, Federer won 7 consecutive games to 1-0 in the final set. The defending champion took a critical break to 4-2 before reaching triple match point at 5-2. Federer missed the first two chances to close, then converted the third as Jaziri hit a forehand wide.

Federer ended the match with 30 of 36 first-service points captured.

He will take on either Albert Montanes or Marcel Granollers in the second round.
