World No. 4 David Ferrer completed a successful title defense at the Copa Claro, holding on to oust world No. 17 Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets. The veteran won his 20th ATP World Tour title Sunday afternoon.
Top seed David Ferrer secured his 20th career title with a three-set ousting of 3rd seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The 30-year-old Spaniard converted six of 11 break points en route to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory in an hour and 45 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Ferrer broke to 3-1 and 5-1 in the deciding set. The defending champion ended the title match with 34 of 49 first-service points captured.
Ferrer is scheduled to continue his clay-court effort next week, looking to defend his 2012 title at the Mexicano Abierto Telcel in Acapulco, Mexico.
