  • Simon upsets Del Potro, Tsonga staves off Tomic

    2/23/13 12:02 AM | Cheryl Murray
Simon upsets Del Potro, Tsonga staves off Tomic Gilles Simon dispatched No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro to advance to the Marseille semifinals.

Gilles Simon (6) def. Juan Martin Del Potro (2) 6-4, 6-3

France's Gilles Simon leveled his head-to-head record against Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro with a win in the Marseille quarterfinal. It was the first match between the two in 6 tries that ended in straight sets.

Simon was in excellent form. He was able to take advantage of a slightly fatigued Del Potro, who couldn't keep pace with the Frenchman from the baseline. Another problem for the Argentine is that he was unable to take advantage of the sometimes attackable Simon serve. The No. 6 seed held off each of the 3 break points against his own serve and proved opportunistic on Del Potro's serve.

The Frenchman secured one break of serve in each set, enough to send the defending champion packing.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3) def. Bernard Tomic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(10)

Bernard Tomic, the youngster from Australia, earned himself 5 match points against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but he was unable to convert, and in the end Tsonga took the tiebreaker 12-10. The Frenchman was dismal on break points. He converted just 1 of 10 chances against the Aussie, while Tomic converted on the only chance he had in the first set.

The best tennis of the match came in the third set tiebreaker. Tomic had many chances to pull off the upset, but Tsonga was mentally tougher.

Tsonga will take on Gilles Simon in the semifinals.
