    2/20/13 11:48 PM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga, Berdych through as seeds advance in Marseille Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and top seed Tomas Berdych advanced to the quarterfinals with wins on Wednesday at the Open 13.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3) def. Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(1), 6-3

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga helped make up for a dismal French showing in Marseille yesterday with a straight-set victory over Nikolay Davydenko on Wednesday. Tsonga wasn't effective on the return in the first set. Though Davydenko served at just 56 percent for the set, Tsonga didn't earn a single break point. He was forced to take the set in a dominant tiebreaker in which he held Davydenko to just one point.

The second set was better for Tsonga. Davydenko's first serve percentage dipped to 45 percent; Tsonga was able to take advantage with a pair of service breaks to send the Russian packing in straight sets.

Tsonga will take on Bernard Tomic in the quarters.

    Tomas Berdych (1) def. Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-7(10), 6-4

Ernests Gulbis, who seems to be finding his form again, put up a monster fight against Tomas Berdych. The two men battled for over two hours, with Berdych just edging out the Latvian in the third set.

There was enough great shot-making to please the crowd and even an unexpected swing of momentum in the second set to send it to a decider. Berdych, who had take the first set on a single break-point chance that the Czech converted.

The second set wasn't so cut and dried for either player. The two men traded breaks of serve to force the breaker. Berdych finally took the mini-break and served for the match at 10-9, only to lose both points on his serve. Gulbis managed to close out the set for 12-10 to force a third.

Berdych was the steadier player in the third, a fact which caused Gulbis to treat the crowd to a fine smash of his racket in frustration. The Czech will take on the winner of Jerzy Janowicz and Julien Benneteau in the quarters.
