It was a bad day for the French, with Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet both sent packing in the first round.
The Open 13 in Marseille will be without some of its top French stars. No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet, who came into the tournament with just two losses on the season, is out of Marseille after a disappointing 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) loss to Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. This loss comes on the heels of an early exit in Rotterdam for Gasquet.
Joining Gasquet on the trip out of the tournament was wild card entrant Gael Monfils, who is still ranked outside the Top 100 thanks to a lengthy injury layoff. Monfils was dispatched by an out-of-form Marcel Granollers, who came into the tournament with a 3-4 record on the season and a much higher ranking in doubles than he has in singles.
Granollers defeated Monfils 6-4, 6-4 to give the Frenchman his second first-round loss in a row. Monfils also lost in the opening round in Rotterdam to eventual champion Juan Martin Del Potro.
