Bernard Tomic advanced to the second round with a win over Martin Klizan on the first day of action in Marseille.
Australia's young star Bernard Tomic is off to a winning start at the Open 13. Tomic defeated No. 8 seed Martin Klizan to advance to the second round.
Klizan just nabbed a seeding this week. The Slovakian is ranked No. 28 in the world due in large part to a mid-season push in 2012 which saw him to a win in St. Petersburg and a fourth-round showing at the US Open. His 2013 season has been far less impressive. Last week's quarterfinal showing in Rotterdam was his best of the year so far, and now he finds himself out in the first round.
Tomic, who isn't at his best indoors, actually out-aced Klizan to take the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) win. The match very nearly went Klizan's way, however. After splitting the first two sets, the two men battled it out in a deciding third.
Klizan had a break lead on Tomic before the Aussie fought back to level the match. The Slovak also led in the tiebreaker before Tomic found his way back to the upset win.
Tomic will take on the winner of Benoit Paire and Somdev Devarrman in the second round.

i was wondering the same thing. Tomic was a considerable favorite according to the oddsmakers.

Let Tomic prove himself consistently before we can say his win over a higher ranked opponent is not an upset.
