Tennis idol Roger Federer is headed for South Africa, arriving in Johannesburg early in the week to inspect a project of his charity foundation and hopefully get a rare chance to meet Nelson Mandela.
Getting a meeting with South Africa's revered former political icon is atop the Federer wish list as he travels to the homeland of his mother for a periodic visit to check on the work of the Roger Federer Foundation.
"I'm really hoping to be able to meet Nelson Mandela, we have been reaching out to him," said the world No. 2 after losing a quarterfinal match at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament to France's Julian Benneteau. "It would be amazing and a dream come true.
"I only have a few days but I want to visit one of the projects of the foundation. I'm looking forward to it since I haven't been to South Africa in some time.
The trip fits perfectly with Federer's entry in the Dubai ATP event, starting February 25, in which he will be defending his 2012 title, seeded second behind Novak Djokovic.

last year or was it the year before, when he caught the lung infection in Ethiopia?
Hopefully Roger doses up on all the right meds before he goes.?

The mighty Fed wants to meet Mandela. If he gets his wish, it would be a rare honor as I am told Mandela is not meeting anyone outside his circle of family and friends.

I don't think Fed ever catches any infections or gets injured. He just pretends to explain his losses.
