  • Cilic, Raonic have eyes on another prize in Memphis

Cilic, Raonic have eyes on another prize in Memphis Recent title winners Marin Cilic and Milos Raonic will continue their successful 2013 campaigns this week in Memphis. They are joined at the 500-point event by John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Fernando Verdasco.

Memphis never has and never will boast one of the strongest 500-point draws of the season, but by its standards the field this year is impressive. It includes Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Tommy Haas, and Fernando Verdasco plus a big American contingent led by John Isner and Sam Querrey.

Cilic and Raonic, the top two seeds, are heading into the U.S. National Indoor Championships on a wave of momentum. Both have captured titles this month--Cilic at home in Zagreb, Croatia and Raonic in what might as well be his hometown of San Jose, California. The Canadian captured his third consecutive title at the event by easily dispatching Tommy Haas on Sunday.

Raonic and Haas could face each other again as early as the quarterfinals in Memphis. An otherwise weak quarter of the bracket should not pose many problems for the two SAP Open finalists, even if they are slightly fatigued. Haas begins with Evgeny Donskoy while Raonic is on a collision course with James Blake for round two. At the top of the draw, Cilic will battle Ivan Dodig in an all-Croat showdown before a possible date with Nishikori in the quarters.

Isner and Querrey (the runner-up and champion of the 2010 tournament, respectively) are obviously on opposite halves as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds. Denis Istomin is up first for Isner, who could meet Lleyton Hewitt in the second round. Querrey is set for another matchup with Alejandro Falla, against whom he saved a match point before beating in three sets at the SAP Open.

If the seeds hold to form, which is unlikely in such a deep event, Cilic would get Querrey in the semis while Raonic would run into Isner.
