Isner, Haas roll into SAP Open semifinals John Isner beats Xavier Malisse in straight sets on Friday in San Jose. Isner is joined in the semifinals by Tommy Haas, who rolled over Steve Johnson.

    (2) John Isner d. (8) Xavier Malisse 7-6(8), 6-2

Isner has always fared his best on American hard courts, and they may be helping him kick-star his 2013 campaign. The world No. 16 earned his best win of what has been a lackluster season when he dismissed Malisse in one hour and eight minutes during quarterfinal action at the SAP Open on Friday afternoon. Malisse was competitive for a while and the two contestants played their way to a ninth career tiebreaker in 13 sets between the two. The veteran Belgian led 3-0 but could not hang on as Isner pulled it out 10 points to eight.

From there it was all over for Malisse, who dropped serve twice in the second after holding comfortably throughout the opener. Isner's two breaks matched those of his clinching set against Vasek Pospisil in their second-round match on Wednesday. The second-seeded American finished with 10 aces and no double-faults while winning an awesome 37 of 41 first-serve points. Next up for Isner is a semifinal showdown against Tommy Haas.

    (4) Tommy Haas d. (WC) Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-2

Johnson's first appearance in an ATP quarterfinal did not last long as the former college standout went down to Haas in one hour and five minutes on Friday afternoon. Johnson had taken out Ivo Karlovic in the first round, but he actually fared worse against the serve of Haas. San Jose's No. 4 seed held all nine of his service games while saving the only break point he faced and he won 27 of 33 first-serve points, including 16 of 18 in the opening set.

Haas took complete control with an early break in the second before snagging another one for insurance. The 34-year-old German wrapped up the proceedings with a final routine hold at 5-2. He concluded his effort with five aces and two double-faults, while Johnson recorded four aces and two doubles.
