Milos Raonic takes care of Michael Russell in straight sets on Thursday in San Jose. Raonic is joined in the quarterfinals by Sam Querrey, who held off Lleyton Hewitt in a third-set tiebreaker.
(1) Milos Raonic d. Michael Russell 6-2, 7-5
Raonic blasted 13 aces and won 30 of 33 first-serve points to beat Russell in one hour and three minutes during second-round action at the SAP Open on Thursday night. The two-time defending champion broke serve in the third game of the match and never looked back. He won all 11 of his first-serve points in the opening set, so two breaks of his own were more than enough to take it.
Russell at least did well to make set two competitive. The 34-year-old American held serve en route to 5-5 but did not come close to breaking his opponent so it was all over when he finally dropped serve in the 11th game. Raonic promptly finished off the proceedings to book his spot in the quarterfinals. Next up for the top-seeded Canadian is a rematch of last season's title match against Denis Istomin.
(3) Sam Querrey d. Lleyton Hewitt 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-6(4)
San Jose witnessed two consecutive matches that ended in third-set tiebreakers on Thursday evening. After Xavier Malisse outlasted Matthew Ebden, Querrey held off Hewitt in two hours and 15 minutes. Querrey actually won six fewer points than Hewitt (111 to 105), but he took both of the tiebreakers to help him advance.
The 20th-ranked American trailed 6-4 in the opening 'breaker, but he won the next four points to steal the set. Despite the disappointment, Hewitt made a swift recovery in set two. A dominant performance paved the way to a decider, in which both competitors saved one break point. The veteran Aussie delivered clutch holds to stay in the match at 4-5 and 5-6, but he could not get over the hump. He fought off one match point at 3-6 but double-faulted on the next to end it. Querrey will face Alejandro Falla for a spot in the semifinals.
