  • Benneteau stuns Federer in Rotterdam quarters

    2/15/13 9:16 PM | Cheryl Murray
Benneteau stuns Federer in Rotterdam quarters Julien Benneteau ousted heavy favorite Roger Federer in straight sets to advance to the Rotterdam semifinals on Saturday.

In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, French veteran Julien Benneteau took out top seed and defending champion Roger Federer in a 6-3, 7-5 shocker.

Benneteau was by far the better player through the first set and half of the second. Federer was out-of-sorts, throwing in ill-timed double faults and generally in a bad rhythm. The Frenchman secured three service breaks, while dropping just one to take a commanding lead in the match.

Federer was still off at the start of the second. Benneteau went up a break and jetted out to a 4-1 lead. Federer held for 4-2 and Benneteau, who seemed to get a bit tight, threw in a shaky service game to give the Swiss back the break of serve.

Momentum seemed to be firmly on Federer's side of the court. Benneteau just barely held for 6-5, relying on three first serves to dig himself out of trouble. Federer, denied the chance to serve for the set, once again lost his way. A backhand error and then a poorly timed double-fault eventually gave Benneteau match point. The Frenchman played well enough to force Federer into an error. The top seed challenged the call, but it went Benneteau's way.

Benneteau will take on the winner of Martin Klizan and Gilles Simon in Saturday's semifinals.

Hm. Welll, Benneteau is inside top 50, 39, actually, so I guess losing to him is ok.

Oh yeah, why because he is Fed?

7 months out of injury and Rafa loses a tough final to Zebalos on clay who was ranked 70 and so much rubbish was thrown at him. Fed who has been active and not on a break loses to Benneteau ranked 39 on his best surface - indoors fast and its all okay

Talk of double standards.
