    Nalbandian advances at Brasil Open, Chardy upset Former World No. 3 David Nalbandian is through to the second round after holding off Chilean qualifier Jorge Aguila in three sets. The veteran is joined by compatriot Martin Alund, who held on to upset 4th seed Jeremy Chardy.

    Former world No. 3 David Nalbandian advanced to the second round with a three-sets ousting of Chile’s Jorge Aguilar. The 31-year-old veteran collected 11 aces and four breaks of serve through two hours and 13 minutes of play. Nalbandian, who won his first singles match of the season, ended the day with 77% of his first-service points captured.

    He moves on to face fellow Argentine Guido Pella for a place in the quarterfinals. =Pella defeated 6th seed Fabio Fognini in the first-round, 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-1.

    Martin Alund def. (4) Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6)

    World No. 111 Martin Alund is through to the second round after upsetting 4th seed Jeremy Chardy late Wednesday. =The 22-year-old Argentine converted two of 11 break points en route to a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) victory in two hours and 36 minutes. Chardy struggled with his second serve in the decider, winning just nine of 26 points.

    Alund will take on either 5th seed Thomaz Bellucci or Filippo Volandri in the next round.
