Roger Federer made quick work of Slovenian Grega Zmelja in his opening round match in Rotterdam.
Roger Federer (1) def. Grega Zmelja 6-3, 6-1
As expected, top seed Roger Federer had no difficulty handling Grega Zmelja in his 2013 Rotterdam debut. The top seed and world No. 2 got out to a quick lead with an early break of Zmelja in the first set. From that point on, the Slovenian played from behind and continued to grow further out of contention as the match progressed.
Zmelja earned a pair of break points in the first set that he was unable to convert. But in the second set, Federer went on a tear; he face no break points and pounced on the Slovenian's dismal 45% first serve percentage to secure two service breaks.
Federer will face Dutch wildcard Thiemo De Bakker in the second round.
Richard Gasquet (4) def. Viktor Troicki 7-6(3), 6-1
France's Richard Gasquet is having one of the best starts he's ever had to a season. With his win on Wednesday, the No. 4 seed moves to a 15-1 record on the season. He is also the only ATP player so far to snag two titles.
He had a tricky start to the match against Serbia's Viktor Troicki. The two men traded breaks of serve to force a first set tiebreaker, but it was Gasquet, so mentally tough this season, who came out ahead to take the one-set lead.
Troicki seemed to wilt after losing the first set. He only managed to win 3 points on the return in the entire frame, and didn't get a whiff at a break point. Gasquet secured three breaks of serve and held Troicki to one game.
Gasquet will take on Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the second round.
