Juan Martin Del Potro had a fight on his hands, but he defeated Ernests Gulbis in an impressive second round performance to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
Juan Martin Del Potro (2) def. Ernests Gulbis 7-6(5), 6-3
This match wasn't as straight-forward as the scoreline suggests. Ernests Gulbis soundly outplayed Del Potro in the first set, though he didn't make a dent on the Del Potro serve. He even managed to keep pace with the Argentine in the tiebreaker until the last few points, where he lost his concentration and with it, the first set.
Del Potro proved opportunistic in the second set. Gulbis stayed even with the No. 2 seed until 3-3, but he faded a bit serving for 4-3 and handed Del Potro what ended up being the match-winning break of serve.
The Argentine will take on Jarkko Nieminen in the quarters.
Marcos Baghdatis def. RIchard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis handed Richard Gasquet just his second defeat of the season with a straight-set victory to reach the Rotterdam quarters. The match-up with Baghdatis has proven to be difficult for Gasquet; the Frenchman has lost all 3 of their encounters.
Baghdatis played an efficient pair of sets. He secured a single break of serve early in both frames without surrendering any of his own service games.
Gasquet, who already has 2 tour title this year, joins countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in an early exit from the tournament.
Baghdatis will take on Bulgarian youngster Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals.

Glad to see that Gulbis is finally fight hungry (or so it seems).
