2012 finalist Juan Martin Del Potro had no difficulty handling one-time top ten player Gael Monfils.
No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Gael Monfils in his first match in Rotterdam. The Argentine, who lost last year's final to Roger Federer, started off his 2013 campaign in fine form.
Coming into Rotterdam, Del Potro had only played the Australian Open; he played a disappointing match to lose in the third round to Jeremy Chardy.
Monfils had plenty of match-play coming into this week, and he showed flashes of the brilliance that once saw him in the top 10. But he had a couple of lapses in concentration that cost him the match.
The Frenchman entertained the crowd with some astounding gets, but it was Del Potro who was the steadier and took advantage of the fact that Monfils contributed one poor service game per set.
Del Potro will meet Ernests Gulbis in the second round.
