Former Brasil Open finalist Thomaz Bellucci survived a difficult opening-round match against compatriot Guilherme Clezar late Tuesday. He is joined in round two by Argentina's Guido Pella, who held on to upset 6th Fabio Fognini.

Fifth seed Thomaz Bellucci advanced to the second round by virtue of his three-set ousting of countryman Guilherme Clezar. The eorld No. 35 struck 19 aces en route to a 7-6(1), 5-7, 7-6(1) victory in two hours and 36 minutes. Bellucci completed the effort with 47 of 58 first-service points captured.
He is slated to face either Filippo Volandri or Daniel Gimeno-Traver for a place in the quarterfinals.

World No. 92 Guido Pella is through to the second round after upsetting 6th seed Fabio Fognini in three sets. The 22-year-old Argentine tallied 7 aces and a trio of service breaks through an hour and 33 minutes of play. Monday’s success marked the first tour-level victory for Pella, who lost back-to-back opening-round matches at the Australian Open and Vina del Mar.
He will take on either qualifier Jorge Aguilar or former world No. 3 David Nalbandian in the next round.
