Grigor Dimitrov won the battle of the young guns in his first round match against Aussie Bernard Tomic, while No. 5 seed Gilles Simon found safe passage to the second round with a win over German qualifier Daniel Brands.
Grigor Dimitrov def. Bernard Tomic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov upended Australia's latest hope Bernard Tomic in the Rotterdam first round. This wasn't tennis at its highest quality, with a particularly poor showing from Tomic in the third set, who appeared winded a few games into the decider.
Dimitrov was the better player throughout, even though the Bulgarian dropped the middle set with a lapse of concentration. But otherwise, Dimitrov served better, moved better and hit more consistently off the baseline.
Dimitrov moves into the second round where he awaits the winner of Nikolay Davydenko and Florian Mayer.
Gilles Simon (5) def. Daniel Brands 7-6(3), 6-4
Gilles Simon managed German qualifier Daniel Brands in straight sets, but Brands put up a fight before going down. Simon was not fantastic on serve in this first round encounter. Brands converted on two of the three break points he earned in the match.
But Simon was effective on the return. He earned 10 break point opportunities, though Brands held him to three breaks of serve. As it turned out, the extra service break was all the Frenchman needed to secure the second set and with it the match win.
Simon will take on Italian qualifier Matteo viola in the next round.
