  • Gasquet secures win over countryman Monfils

    2/8/13 12:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet secures win over countryman Monfils Richard Gasquet passed a tricky second-round test against fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils to advance to the quarterfinals in Montpellier.

This was not a fantastic match from Gael Monfils. The Frenchman, who was sidelined with injury for much of the 2012 season, has still not found his Top-10 form. While he has been better than his 108th ranking would suggest, he is still prone to too many errors from the back of the court. But even with his unforced error count too high, he still managed to take the middle set before falling to Gasquet 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Gasquet had opportunities to close out the match at 5-2 on serve in the third, but Monfils broke to make it 3-5. That success was short-lived, however. Gasquet rebounded immediately with another break of serve to send Monfils packing.

His win sets up an intriguing showdown with another Frenchman, Julien Benenteau, the No. 6 seed.
