  • Troicki advances, Davydenko ousted in Montpellier

    2/7/13 3:56 AM | Cheryl Murray
Troicki advances, Davydenko ousted in Montpellier No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko bowed out today at the Open Sud de France, while No. 7 Viktor Troicki moved into the second round with a win over a French wildcard.

Jarkko Nieminen def. Nikolay Davydenko (5) 6-3, 7-6(8)

Finland's Jarkko Nieminen finds himself in the quarterfinals in Montpellier for the second year running, except this time, he upended Nikolay Davydenko, a player he has not had a win against since 2003.

Nieminen is a dangerous player who can play well enough to surprise even top seeds, but his win over Davydenko, against whom he's had a matchup problem for years, is a particularly good one. Especially as Davydenko has played well in 2013 so far.

The Finn wasn't at his best on Wednesday. Nieminen served no aces, hit four double-faults and served at a decent but impressive 65% for the match. It was enough to take a one break lead from Davydenko in the first set and to edge out the Russian in a tight breaker in the second.

Nieminen awaits the winner of Sergiy Stakhovsky and Tatsuma Ito in the quarters.

Viktor Troicki (7) def. Lucas Pouille 6-4, 7-5

French wild card Lucas Pouille put up a fight in his straight-set defeat of No. 7 seed Viktor Troicki. Though Pouille didn't manage to earn any break points, he defended his own serve well, even serving at an anemic 47% for the match.

Troicki managed to get a break of serve in each set, but the match-winning break didn't come until Pouille was serving to send the second set to a tiebreaker.

Troicki will take on Jan Hajek in the second round.
