One day before Rafael Nadal returns to action in singles, he picks up a doubles victory in Vina del Mar. Nadal and Juan Monaco advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.
It may not have been a singles match, but Rafael Nadal returned to tennis with a victory on Monday in Vina del Mar.
Nadal and Juan Monaco defeated Frantisek Cermak and Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the VTR Open. The duo saved all six of the break points it faced to advance after one hour and four minutes.
Cermak and Dlouhy entered as the No. 2 seeds, but they never had control of this one. Nadal and Monaco broke midway through the opening set then added another at 5-3 to close out the set in style.
After fighting off two break points in the opener, the Spanish-Argentine pair saved four more in the second. Two breaks were once again more than enough for the crowd favorites, whose fourth break of the day ended the match. Nadal and Monaco finished with one ace and two double-faults. They benefited from seven double-faults by their opponents and won 12 of 18 second-serve points.
"It was a great feeling to play again and I'm very happy for doing it with a friend like Monaco in a great atmosphere that we had on the court," Nadal commented.
The fifth-ranked Spaniard will begin in singles against Federico Delbonis during second-round action on Wednesday.
