Filippo Volandri is through to the Vina del Mar second round after taking care of Leonardo Mayer in straight sets on Monday. Volandri awaits either Albert Ramos or Rogerio Dutra Silva.
If Filippo Volandri goes into hibernation on an annual basis after the French Open, he never fails to come out of it for the Golden Swing. Volandri did it again on Monday, crushing Leonardo 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the VTR Open.
The 90th-ranked Italian dropped serve once in the opening set, but he more than made up for it with two breaks of his own. Volandri's second break came at 5-2 to finish it off in style.
Mayer, who has been battling various injuries for several seasons now, completely disappeared in set two. The 76th-ranked Argentine won only a single point in four return games. He held serve once before Volandri closed out the proceedings with final routine hold at 5-1.
Next up for the winner is either Rogerio Dutra Silva or No. 5 seed Albert Ramos.
