Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Benoit Paire will be the feature matches on Tuesday night, as the singles draw gets under way in Montpellier.
Gael Monfils vs. Ruben Bemelmans
There is little ranking difference between Gael Monfils and Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans. Both men are ranked outside the top 100, with Monfils just edging Bemelmans 108 to 118. The problem for Bemelmans is that the Monfils ranking drop is due exclusively to injury. The Frenchman is the far more experienced and talented player. Monfils is on the comeback trail. He already has a semi-final showing in 2013 and he lost a thriller of a third round match at the Australian Open against countryman Gilles Simon.
Prediction - Monfils to start off his tournament with a straight-set win.
Benoit Paire vs. Adrian Menendez-Maceiras
World No. 43 Benoit Paire will take on Spanish qualifier Adrian Menendez-Maceiras in his first round match in Montpellier. The Spaniard is currently ranked 207 in the world, but he successfully qualified for the Australian Open and has now qualified into the main draw this week.
Paire had an impressive run in the first event of the year in Chennai, making the semi-finals, but his results since then have been disappointing first round losses. Still, the Frenchman will be playing at home and against a less experienced player.
Prediction - Paire in straight sets.
