  • Italy ousts Croatia to move into round 2

    2/4/13 2:03 AM | Cheryl Murray
Italy ousts Croatia to move into round 2 Marin Cilic won both of his singles matches, but it wasn't enough to put Croatia through against Italy.

Top Croat Marin Cilic held his own against the Italian squad, who was playing at home on their preferred clay, but he wasn't able to do enough to move Croatia to 3 wins. Cilic defeated top Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to level the tie at 2-2, but his Croat countryman Ivan Dodig couldn't get it done against Fabio Fognini.

Fognini, who didn't play the first singles rubber on Friday, rose to the occasion on Sunday. The Italian got off to a slow start, dropping the first set of the decider to Ivan Dodig, but he rallied to the delight of the crowd to win the next three with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Italy will take on the Canadians in round 2.
