• Berdych leads the field in Montpellier

    2/4/13 3:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych leads the field in Montpellier After leading the Czech team to a first-round win on the weekend in Switzerland, Tomas Berdych will make his way to Montpellier, France where he will enjoy a first round bye.

The Open Sud de France in Montpellier has a good field this year, with world No. 6 Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic heading the men's draw along with many Frenchmen to delight the crowds.

The top ranked Frenchman this week is Richard Gasquet, but Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils, Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra are also on the ticket.

Berdych's section of the draw contains No. 4 seed Gasquet, No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko and No. 6 Julien Benneteau. The Czech top seed faces a probably second round encounter with Jarkko Nieminen. Berdych will be favored to come through his half, but he comes into the tournament off a long weekend in Switzerland and a good run the week before in Melbourne at the Australian Open.

Janko Tipsarevic drew seeds Gilles Simon (4) and Viktor Troicki (7). The Serb had a great start to the year. He won the title in Chennai and went through to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. Tipsarevic elected to skip Davis Cup on the weekend, so he'll come into the event fresh.

Prediction - Tipsarevic for the title.
