Frank Dancevic and Milos Raonic both fronted up for the home crowd to put last year's finalist Spain in a 2-0 hole headed into Saturday's doubles rubber.
In one of the more shocking results of the first weekend of Davis Cup play, number two Canadian Frank Dancevic dismantled Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. The win for the world No. 166 gave Canada a shocker 2-0 lead over 2012 finalist Spain.
Milos Raonic started proceedings with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Albert Ramos, but it was Dancevic who thrilled the crowds with a stellar performance.
Dancevic was helped along by a horrific break point conversion rate by Granollers, who went 0 for 13 in the brief straight-set loss.
The Canadian, who often struggles with consistency, had a brilliant showing. Dancevic pounded away from the baseline and kept Granollers from getting any kind of momentum on serve.
The doubles team of Granollers and Marc Lopez will take on Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil in an attempt to remain alive for the rest of the Davis Cup season.
