  • Spain takes on Canada without Nadal or Ferrer

    2/1/13 5:32 AM | Cheryl Murray
Spain takes on Canada without Nadal or Ferrer Milos Raonic and the Canadians will host a bare bones Spanish side, who travels without most of their top players and stands some chance of being upset in the first round.

Though Spain is considered by some to be the strongest tennis nation on the planet at the moment, their Davis Cup contingent shows little of that might. The side, who has won the Cup 3 times since 2008, is anchored this time by Marcel Granollers, a player whose No. 5 doubles ranking far exceeds his No. 35 singles status.

Canada goes in with head honcho Milos Raonic ready to hold down the fort in Vancouver. The top Canadian will likely have to do the lion's share of the work. The team's other singles candidate is Frank Dancevic, whose ranking sits at 166 in the world.

Spain's other singles contribution is Albert Ramos, a capable player ranked just 1 spot outside the top 50. Ramos hasn't won a match yet this year.

Canada is going to have a real shot at taking out the big dog. Raonic is wildly popular in Canada and will surely want to perform for his countryman; he will probably take both of his rubbers. It will be up to Dancevic or the duo of Vasek Pospisil and Daniel Nestor to take the decider. With the power team of Granollers and Lopez, it might well come down to the winner of the Dancevic-Ramos rubber.
