Marin Cilic, Croatia's top player had a fight on his hands, with the big man getting taken to 5 sets by late singles entrant Paolo Lorenzi.
Croatia took the first rubber, thanks to Marin Cilic, but it was a tough battle for the Croat, who finally won 6-1, 6-7(6), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Italy's Lorenzi got off to a slow start, to the dismay of the hometown crowd, but he found his game by the second set.
Cilic, who is known for a big first serve, was outplayed in the tiebreaker and again in the third set, where Lorenzi was able to take advantage of Cilic's sloppy baseline play. The Croat pressed too hard, playing high-risk tennis and paid the price with the third set.
Lorenzi couldn't keep up with Cilic in the end. The Croat began to pull away in the fourth set and ended the fifth with a pair of breaks, including one at 5-2 to seal the win for Croatia.
Cilic is slated to take on top Italian Andreas Seppi in reverse singles on Sunday.
