Jo-Wilfried Tsonga may find himself in the firing line of the WTA after he gave his innocent opinion about the difference in top players after a five-set loss to Roger Federer at the Australian Open.
The personable Frenchman said that the top four men are there for a reason - and it's a reason which probably doesn't apply to their female counterparts, with the WTA leading rankings changing, rotating and swopping on a regular basis.
"In tennis, you cannot lie. If they (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal) are number one, number two, number three, number four, it's because they deserve it and because they are the best players at the moment. That's it," he said after going down to Federer in three and a half hours.
For the smiling Tsonga, the ATP elite have a glacial stability missing from their opposite numbers.
"The girls, they are more unstable emotionally than us. I'm sure everybody will say it's true even the girls.... you don't think?
"It's just about hormones and all this stuff. We don't have all these bad things, so we are physically in a good shape every time, and you are not. That's it."
Federer kept his opinion on the topic more PC, saying: "It's become very much a game of movement. Maybe the top guys just move a tiny bit better than the rest of the guys. I'm not sure about that, but seems like it.
"And I guess in the best of five, down the stretch, it just seems that we do find a way. I don't know how to explain it."

I'm sure Tsonga wasn't completely serious; seemed a lot less provocative that Krajicek for example. Love how the media sensationalizes this.
samprallica , 1/24/13 11:41 PM
I think Tsonga is a sweet chap and he did not say anything which WTA players can take exception to. Women being more affected by hormonal cycles is a fact.

Tsonga was joking and it was pretty obvious. People in the pressroom were laughing as well. Trust looney feminists to make something out of nothing.
jean , 1/25/13 11:49 AM
It doesn't matter how much he was joking. Anytime a man references PMS as a reason for...well...anything, some woman is going to take offense.
I think it was pretty funny as well. :D
cherylmurray , 1/25/13 5:20 PM
That opinion of this Tsonga is not new at all.
Simon etc also making the remark which looked down on WTA.
Many past great players had also said.
"The level of WTA is lower than ATP."
especially about prize.?"should make WTA lower than ATP."
nothing new.

If feminists are so capable, why can't they just get over it?
Woo hoo!
alex , 1/26/13 1:53 AM
For the record, I do not consider myself a looney feminist. Just your normal everyday one! For too long this nonsense about women not being able to function or somehow being inferior because of their hormones, has been accepted as fact. I grew up hearing all that garbage through too much of my life. So it's not funny to me.
Unfortunately, there are still people who believe this nonsense. In fact, there are a few of them on this site. Everyone here knows the kind of comments that have been posted attacking some women on this site. Comments about being old, having hormone problems, menopause and on and on.
That's what really bothers me. If Tsonga thought it was funny to say that stuff, then he has a dumb sense of humor. Because there are ignorant, sexist people who really believe it. That's the sad part.
Nativenewyorker , 1/26/13 3:00 AM
Nny -
Sorry if I offended you. My issue is with the kind of feminism that is in dire need of a sense of humour. Tsonga may have lacked subtlety but he was clearly just having a laugh. Confident women take it in their stride and give as good as they get.
I'm quite sure J-W knows as well as anyone else that the women's game just now just appears fragile for the lack of a BJ King or Martina Navratilova. The one would-be Ms Consistency, Serena, doesn't play half the year, so that exaggrates the problem at a time when the very top of the men's game is truly spoilt for ever-present potential slam winners.
alex , 1/26/13 4:17 AM
alex,
You could never, ever offend me! If you read what I said closely, I was addressing some comments that were by others. That's why I referenced the term "looney feminist". You did not say that!
I agree that humor is an important component at times just to get through life. But I grew up in a time when the things that Tsonga said in fun were said seriously. It brings back some painful memories. As I indicated, what concerns me more deeply is that there are many who actually do believe what he said. They take that as essential truth about women.
There are definitely problems in women's tennis these days. I remember Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. Those were the days! There is a real lack of consistently great tennis among too many of the female players. For a long time we had Wozniacki as the #1 player in the world, yet she had never even won a slam.
The two semifinal women's matches were just dreadful. Li Na just cleaned Sharapova's clock. Azarenka still struggled to beat a Sloane Stephens who had nothing left after her upset win over Serena.
I saw encouraging signs at times in the women's game, but not nearly enough. Not only does Serena not play in many matches, but now that she is in the latter stages of her career she is becoming more injury prone.
Finally, I just wanted to say that your comment about feminists was well said! So don't worry, now that I have had my say about Tsonga and his comments, I will not be losing any sleep over it! :)
Nativenewyorker , 1/26/13 5:43 AM
I have stayed in boarding schools, hostels etc and I can say from my personal experience and that of the other women I have known that most women suffer the effects of hormonal cycles (though with pills etc much of the effect can be controlled). Don't know why NNY is in denial.True, men can be annoying when they attribute everything to hormones. But we cannot deny that there is any effect.
And being different doesn't mean we are inferior. In fact. biologically women are stronger and what is more, are likely to survive evolution which men might not (read how the y chromosome might get extinct).
Claiming WTA is inferior to ATP is ridiculous. We can only say the women players today are in the weak era whereas the men are not. What about 2001-2007 when ATP was in the weak era? At that time WTA was in the strong era. Did anyone then demand that Federer should be paid less than Justine Henin or Serena Williams?
Even in the 90s when ATP was in good condition, it was the women's game which was more interesting because the men's service games were over in a flash.
It is only now (from 2008) that ATP has entered an unusually strong era with matches showing great variety.
holdserve , 1/26/13 5:58 AM
I'm glad Tsonga made that joke. Not only was it so funny, but it's showing up the ones without any sense of humour!! I hope they take themselves even more seriously!
jean , 1/26/13 8:20 AM
LOL!...Tsonga is an animal on court, but in real life... guy is all milk and honey... he was only joking.
zare , 1/26/13 9:45 AM
GOOOOOO Na Li i!!!!!
zare , 1/26/13 9:47 AM
Even though Tsonga was just joking, he made a very valid point.
nadline , 1/26/13 9:55 AM
I am not in denial. I stated my point of view and stand by it. If some want to imply that I don't have a sense of humor, then they do not know me at all. I also dislike anyone presuming to characterize me as someone who takes things too seriously.
I have nothing more to say on this subject.
Nativenewyorker , 1/26/13 10:02 AM
Serena was injured. She has tweeted pictures of her swollen ankle.

WTA is a joke. And it has been since Henin left. Serena doesn't play half the season, Venus is done, Sharapova is ok, not what she used to be though.
Until WTA gets true tennis stars, somebody who cares more about winning GS, setting records..., it will remain a joke. A good portion of them care more about money, fame, shopping... They care more about if they look fat in their dress than if they'll win a match. See Ana Ivanovic.
Of course, there are some exceptions such as Na Li, Azarenka, and Sharapova to a cerain extent.
It's an absolute travesty how they get the same prize money as men.

If Fed's generation has Djoko or Nadal or Andy, Did they continue winning like Roger?
I am tired with the excuse for insulting Roger of Roger Federer anti
no competition and weak era. Is it a fact?
OK, Roger does not exist as assumption. Then, other great players exist in that time. Could they continue winning like Roger Federer?
And please also give me this explanation. Davydenko > Nadal. Roddick > Djokovic.

tennisnba , 1/26/13 4:36 PM
Davydenko > Nadal.
Roddick > Djokovic.
My explanation. It is from Roddick's decline that Djokovic began to win Roddick.
Djokovic or Nadal are blessed with the too much slow surface age. If they exist in the quick time of grass or hard court, there are few chances for them to win the victory.
I'm sure. Heyday Roddick almost wins heyday Djokovic by hard court.
Because, the Roger Federer generation's time was surface still faster than now. especially US open, etc.

always says. The Roger Federer era did not have competition and weak. Since there was competition now, it became impossible for Roger Federer to win. Although present Roger is already old and decline.

I meant the players. Last year, as the winners, Sharapova and Djokovic each got $2.3M. One played a history making, 6 hour, 5 set epic final (after playing another, 5 hour epic in the semifinal), the other was done in like 45min. Not to mention the difference in quality of tennis.
WTA is in my opinion, at an all time low. It desperately needs another Serena, Clisters, Henin...
nemanja230690 , 1/26/13 5:10 PM
tennisnba, it's just as well you don't like Rafa because it appears that he is in your thoughts all the time; you can't let a day go by without thinking about him. I think you are in denial, you are really a rabid Rafan.
nadline , 1/26/13 5:32 PM
Do any of you men even watch the WTA? Ridiculous to say it's at an all time low. What's with these double standards here? Did the big 4 not take the 4 GS last year? Well so did the women.
The top 3 women took the 4 GS last year, with Serena being the most dominant of the three... Granted she missed a bit of time with some freak injuries, she's back now and will remain near the top till she retires... Sharapova as well, was off due to a lengthy injury and returned to form last year... and people forget just how young she is. Still only 25. Azarenka is also only 23 and now that she's finally matured, should stay on top for some time too...
Last but not least, the supporting cast is not that bad either. Na Li with a French Open, Stosur with a USO win, Wozniacki still young and improving.

ITF slams are shared events and therefore should have equal pay.

Hormones ? hahah.
The actual WTA is boring just because they are all awful players. Contemporary women's tennis ended with Justin Henin.
Nothing to do with hormones here. WTA have had its really good old days.
