Tenth seed Nicolas Almagro made the last eight at the Australian Open after 8th seed Janko Tipsarevic retired with a heel injury. The Spaniard is through to take on compatriot David Ferrer in the next round.
World No. 11 Nicolas Almagro advanced to the final eight following the retirement of World No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic. The 10th seed had built a 6-2, 5-1 advantage when the 8th seed called it a day with a heel injury.
"It is a big opportunity for me to be in a semifinal. I'm ready to fight," Almagro said, post-match. "I'm healthy and I'm happy with my tennis. I think I'm playing really good. (David Ferrer is) hitting the ball with a lot of confidence, and we'll see what happens on Tuesday."
Almagro completed the abbreviated match with four service breaks and 24 winners.
He moves on to meet world No. 5 Ferrer, who beat 16th seed Kei Nishikori in straight sets.
