    1/18/13 4:51 PM | Cheryl Murray
Wawrinka takes out last American man, Anderson ousts Verdasco Stanislas Wawrinka dispatched of the last American man in the singles draw, Sam Querrey, while South African Kevin Anderson sent Fernando Verdasco packing.

    Stanislas Wawrinka (15) def. Sam Querrey (20) 7-6(6), 7-5, 6-4

Stanislas Wawrinka put on an impressive display in his straight-set win over Sam Querrey. The Swiss No. 2 found his range early on his best shot, a lovely one-handed backhand that consistently brushed Querrey back from his preferred position at the baseline.

The first set featured no breaks of serve. The American actually won more points (40 to Wawrinka's 37), but it was Wawrinka who came up with the goods in the tiebreaker.

Querrey managed to finally get a break of Wawrinka's serve in the third set, but he surrendered two to give the Swiss the straight-set victory.

    Kevin Anderson def. Fernando Verdasco (22) 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco is no stranger to five-set matches at the Australian Open. He was part of one of an epic semi-final against eventual champion and countryman Rafael Nadal back in 2009. This one doesn't have the distinctions that the semifinal did, but it was another five-set effort that Verdasco eventually lost.

Anderson did not earn as many free points on serve as he often does; the South African hit just nine aces for the match. But he served at 76 percent, a statistic that ultimately saw him to victory.

Anderson will do battle with No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.
