Rafter tips Tomic for Open success Pat Rafter has temporarily sacked headstrong youngster Bernard Tomic from the national Davis Cup side for disciplinary reasons.

But after a breakthrough title in the run-up to the Australian Open, the Davis skipper is taking a closer look at his next-generation potential star.

Rafter was tipping Sydney weekend champion Tomic to get past his first-round match at Melbourne Park, a rare bright spot for national hopes after eight Aussies fell on opening day at the major.

"Obviously every match is tough, especially the first-round of a Grand Slam after winning a title, but he's playing really well and hopefully he can keep that going. He needs to keep it really simple. If he does that, there's no reason he can't get through.

Tomic defeated Argentine opponent Leo Mayer, who has a sketchy hard-court record. "You want to be in the draw, and once Bernie gets that first round under his belt, he'll relax a bit."
