Federer makes quick work of Paire in first round Roger Federer eases past Benoit Paire in straight sets on Tuesday in Melbourne. Federer will go up against Nikolay Davydenko in a highly-anticipated round-two clash.

Roger Federer kicked off his bid for a fifth Australian Open title in routine fashion, as he disposed of Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Federer fired a trio of aces without double-faulting and he saved all three of the break points he faced to advance after a mere one hour and 23 minutes.

Melbourne's No. 2 seed was off to the races right from the start. He broke immediately for a 1-0 advantage in the first set then earned another scalp of the Paire serve at 4-2 to put a swift end to any early suspense. Federer held comfortably in the eighth game, converting his second set point when Paire erred on the return.

A single break at 1-1 in the second was all Federer needed for a two-set lead. For the third, Paire went into fun-and-games mode. The 46th-ranked Frenchman eventually delivered some impressive shot-making after an initial walkabout, but the entire match was one-way traffic. Federer kept strictly to his business and finished off the proceedings in ultra-quick style.

"There is a bit of a relief to that," the second-ranked Swiss said of making it through the first round, "because you don't know for sure where you're at. I'm obviously very happy with this first-round match. Total control.

"He can be a tricky opponent, but I guess his playing style doesn't disturb me that much overall. I'm happy I was able to play a clean match out there today."

Next up for Federer is familiar foe Nikolay Davydenko, who overcame Dudi Sela in four sets.

Leave roof open in Aust so more enters into winning. Dealing with the conditions is part of being a champion. Temp rising--- I'll watch.
