  • Verdasco withstands Goffin charge

    1/14/13 12:46 PM | Cheryl Murray
Verdasco withstands Goffin charge Fernando Verdasco came back from two sets to one down to defeat tough Belgian David Goffin in the opening round of play at the Australian Open.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco drew yet another talented youngster in the first round of the Australian Open. While the No. 22 seed lost to Bernard Tomic at last year's edition, he came out on top on Monday. Verdasco dispatched David Goffin of Belgium 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The first set was relatively routine for Verdasco. He secured a break of serve at 2-2, a break he held onto for a 6-3 lead. But Goffin was not ready to give up so easily.

The Belgian displayed the movement that took him through qualifying and all the way to the round of 16 at the French Open last year and managed to secure a pair of breaks from Verdasco to level the match at a set apiece.

Verdasco drew first blood in the third set, but he lost his way and not only gave the break back, but lost another to give Goffin a two sets to one lead.

With another first round loss looming for Verdasco, the Spaniard dug deep to stay in the fourth set. Goffin had seven chances to break Verdasco's serve, but only converted once, while Verdasco took a pair of breaks from the Belgian.

Verdasco finally closed out the match after nearly 3 and a half hours of play with a single break of serve in the deciding set. The Spaniard will take on Goffin's countryman Xavier Malisse in the second round.
