    (4) David Ferrer def. Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4, 6-2

Fourth seed David Ferrer is through to the second round after dismissing Belgium's Olivier Rochus Monday evening. The 30-year-old Spaniard converted six of 15 break points en route to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and 50 minutes. Ferrer, who won his fourth title in Auckland on Sunday, completed the match with 30 winners to 17 unforced errors.

He faces lucky loser Tim Smyczek for a place in the third round. The American defeated Ivo Karlovic in the first round, 6-4, 7-6(5), 7-5.

    (8) Janko Tipsarevic def. Lleyton Hewitt 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-3

Eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic reached round two after holding off former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt late Monday. The world No. 9 tallied 47 winners and 14 aces through three hours and two minutes of play. Tipsarevic rallied from a 0-3 double-break hole in the second, eventually leading by two sets and 3-0 in the third.

"I think Lleyton Hewitt is as tough as it gets for a first round Australian Open (match), first Grand Slam of the year," Tipsarevic explained. "I cannot tell you how happy I am, first of all, that I managed to win, and second of all, to win in straight sets.

"I have confidence from two weeks ago, because I won an event. I really look forward to going deep in this tournament."

"I could have easily been up two sets to love," said Hewitt. "Against quality players, you have got to take those chances obviously. But to his credit, he raised his level and played some great points."

Tipsarevic is slated to take on Slovakia's Lukas Lacko in the next round. Lacko upended veteran Gilles Muller in the first round, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3).
