  • Djokovic and Berdych breeze into second round

    1/14/13 1:12 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic and Berdych breeze into second round Top seed Novak Djokovic and No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych had no trouble getting into the second round in Melbourne on opening day.

    Novak Djokovic (1) def. Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-4, 7-5

Defending champion Novak Djokovic got off to an impressive start at the Australian Open against experienced French veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Serb was crisp and efficient. He faced just three break points in the match, none of which Mathieu converted.

The Serb served at 64% for the match, struck nine aces and two double-faults.

Djokovic kept the stat sheet clean. The world No. 1 struck 31 winners to just 16 unforced errors. He will take on American Ryan Harrison in the next round.

    Tomas Berdych (5) def. Michael Russell 6-3, 7-5, 6-3

Tomas Berdych did not fare quite as well on serve as Djokovic. The No. 5 seed was broken twice in his match against American journeyman Michael Russell, but he also broke Russell six times en route to his straight-set victory.

Despite the few bright spots on the return, Russell never really got any momentum. He buckled under the weight of Berdych's pace of shot and didn't serve well enough to hold off the Czech, even in the second set where he served to force a tiebreaker.

Berdych will play Frenchman Guillaume Rufin in the second round.
