In-form Ferrer seeded fourth at Australian Open The 2013 season continues as competition commences at the Australian Open in Melbourne. With the absence of 2009 champion Rafael Nadal, compatriot David Ferrer enters the 128-player draw seeded fourth.

World No. 5 David Ferrer returns to hard-court action following a championship finish at the Heineken Open. The 30-year-old Spaniard won his fourth title in Auckland, downing 2008 winner Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets.

Ferrer will be making his 11th appearance at the Australian Open, where he advanced to the final four in 2011 (lost to Murray).

The fourth seed leads a competitive quarter of the draw that includes (8) Janko Tipsarevic, (10) Nicolas Almagro, (16) Kei Nishikori, (23) Mikhail Youzhny, (24) Jerzy Janowicz, (28) Marcos Baghdatis, and (32) Julien Benneteau.

Additional players in the section are Ivo Karlovic, Albert Ramos, Matthew Ebden, Carlos Berlocq, Victor Hanescu, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Lukasz Kubot, Bjorn Phau, Somdev Devvarman, Simone Bolelli, Lukas Lacko, Grigor Dimitrov and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

The nearest seed to Ferrer is Baghdatis, who looms as a possible third-round opponent. Further progress through the draw may set a round of 16 clash with Nishikori or Youzhny. Should the Spaniard progress into week two, he could face either Almagro or Tipsarevic in the quarterfinals.

Ferrer will open his 2013 Australian Open bid against Belgium's Olivier Rochus.
