• Djokovic and Berdych share top quarter at Australian Open

    1/13/13 4:28 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic and Berdych share top quarter at Australian Open Defending champion Novak Djokovic drew a relatively favorable draw for the first week of play, but his next highest seed and possible quarterfinal opponent is the tricky No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych.

Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic should have a mostly routine first week in Melbourne. His first round opponent is the Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu. The first seed he is slated to face is Radek Stepanek, who he has beaten in 7 of their 8 encounters.

American Sam Querrey also waits in this part of the quarter along with No. 15 seed Stanislas Wawrinka.

Tomas Berdych's half of the section is perhaps even more favorable than Djokovic's. The Czech, who is the No. 5 seed, drew Argentine clay courter Juan Monaco as the No. 11 seed and the inconsistent No. 22 seed Fernando Verdasco.

Expect Djokovic and Berdych to find their way through to the quarters for a potential blockbuster match.
