  • Federer faces tough Australian Open quarter

    1/12/13 9:24 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer faces tough Australian Open quarter Roger Federer may have to deal with formidable opposition from start to finish at this year's Australian Open. He is in a star-studded section of the draw that also includes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Milos Raonic, and Tommy Haas.

The Australian Open draw may not be set up in ideal fashion for Roger Federer, but it's even worse for everyone else in the fourth and final section of the bracket.

Among the seeded players are Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Milos Raonic, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Tommy Haas. As if that group isn't daunting enough, the contingent of unseeded floaters boats Jarkko Nieminen, Lukas Rosol, Bernard Tomic, Nikolay Davydenko, and Benoit Paire.

The entirety of Federer's first week is likely to feature three of those unseeded threats. Melbourne's No. 2 seed open against Paire, could face Davydenko in round two, and is on a collision course with Tomic for the third round. Paire reached the Chennai semifinals, Davydenko finished runner-up in Doha, and Tomic won the Sydney title.

Potential fourth-round opponents for Federer are Raonic and Kohlschreiber.. Raonic underwhelmed in Brisbane and at the Kooyong Classic, but he is up to No. 15 in the world, made it to the Australian Open fourth round as a qualifier in 2011, and he has troubled Federer in the past (a trio of three-set losses, two in third-set tiebreakers). Kohlschreiber has advanceed the fourth round three times, once via an epic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-7(3), 8-6 victory over Andy Roddick.

Tsonga's top half of the section is not quite as strong, but the Frenchman will have to wake up from early-season malaise right away. He opens against compatriot Michael Llodra and could eventually run into the Gasquet-Haas winner in round four.

In addition to Tsonga-Llodra and Federer-Paire, first-rounders to watch include Haas vs. Nieminen and Martin Klizan against in-form qualifier Daniel Brands.

Djokovic targets RG in 2013

So ambitions are always high. I want to win every Grand Slam that I play, want to win every big tournament that I play. So there is no difference for the next year?s ambition.

RG is always at the top of my priority list and ambitions. It?s the only Slam I haven?t won. I played in the final.

yes, a tough draw for Fed, but I'm still confident/hopeful that he'll make it to the semis....good luck to Leyton in the opener vs Tipsy!
