(WC) Gael Monfils def. (Q) Benjamin Becker 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4

Former world No. 7 Gael Monfils is through to the second round after rallying to upend Germany's Benjamin Becker. The 26-year-old Frenchman tallied 19 aces through an hour and 53 minutes of play.

"I missed a lot of tennis but I’m improving and I need more matches to be on my top form," Monfils explained. "It's a new year, a new challenge. I think if I still believe in myself I'll be back soon enough at the top. I talk a lot about that with my parents and they tell me it is ok to start again; I want to make it again."

Monfils, who saved eight of nine break points during the match, faces qualifier Greg Jones in the next round.

    (Q) Greg Jones def. (6) Jurgen Melzer 7-6(7), 6-2

Qualifier Greg Jones advanced to round two by virtue of his straight-sets ousting of 6th seed Jurgen Melzer. The Australian held 10 of 10 service games en route to a 7-6(7), 6-2 victory in 82 minutes.

"I played pretty aggressive, I come to the net a fair bit, so when I play well it's difficult for my opponent, I put them in an uncomfortable position," Jones said. "I was fortunate that he hasn’t seen me play a lot, but I've seen him play a lot on TV and throughout all the slams, so I have a huge amount of respect for him. I was lucky that I was on my game and I think the wind may have helped me a little bit too."

Jones completed the effort with 11 aces and just 10 points surrendered on serve.
