• Berdych signs on as eighth man at Kooyong

Berdych signs on as eighth man at Kooyong The last-minute signing of Davis Cup hero Tomas Berdych completes the lineup for this week's AAMI Classic at Kooyong club, final elite tune-up prior to the start of the Australian Open in a week.

Officials at the former home of the Open had been holding a possible place for Rafael Nadal, but had that idea scuppered as the injured Spaniard delayed his comeback to tennis yet again, this time for a stomach virus after more than six months away with knee problems.

Berdych helped the Czechs to glory in November's Davis Cup final over Spain. The world No. 6 joins an eight-man field which also includes Juan Martin Del Potro, Lleyton Hewitt, Milos Raonic, Janko Tipsarevoic, Juan Monaco, Kei Nishikori and Marcos Baghdatis.

Berdych lost in the Chennai quarter-finals and decided that he needed more matches heading into the major at Melbourne Park.

The Czech won 2012 titles in Montpelier and Stockholm and reached the finals at the Madrid Masters, Dusseldorf and Winston Salem.

in what world is Berdych a Davis Cup "hero" ????

RickyDimon , 1/7/13 9:13 PM

Er, by helping the Czechs win the 2012 DC for the first time in their history, after beating 6-time winners Spain in the final. Bit of a no-brainer, I'd have thought.
Don't listen to him, Johan, he's having a no-news night, or bored or something.

Stepanek is the name you are looking for

RickyDimon , 1/8/13 12:18 AM

Both Berdych and Stepanek played 3 matches each over the 3 day event in Prague
It was deserving that they were the winners of the Davis Cup . Spain almost robbed them tho in the last match. I was there and the local fans were awesome but loud .Any tennis match now will sound very quiet after that week end there in the O2 Arena .

Yes, you're quite right. And having actually been there you're probably more aware of his achievement than any of us. I too was going to point out that DC is actually a TEAM event, but I thought 1) it's ricky, and 2) what am i doing defending big bird, the player on tour i have least time for. That said, even I have to grudgingly admit that last year berdych was indeed a dc hero. But that's all the praise he's getting from me:-)

hero suggests someone died fighting for freedom

but if you want to call someone who lost to David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 then I guess that's cool, too.

A davis cup hero for pointing out the weak link in the opposition team :p

Wow, Hewitt downs the big bird 3&2! Nice one.
